Kenya
A scenic freshwater Rift Valley lake known for boat-based hippo and bird viewing, and walking safaris on Crescent Island.
Lake Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Kenyan Rift Valley, and its sheltered waters and fertile shoreline support one of the densest hippo populations in the country alongside more than 400 recorded bird species. Boat trips are the main way to explore it, gliding close to pods of hippo and past fish eagles, pelicans and herons working the shallows. Crescent Island, a private sanctuary on the lake’s edge, has no predators large enough to threaten visitors, which makes it one of the few places in Kenya where you can walk freely among giraffe, zebra and antelope. The wider area, dotted with flower farms and historic homesteads including Joy Adamson’s Elsamere, makes Naivasha an easy, low-key stop between Nairobi and the parks further west.
