Overview

Tsavo East is enormous even by African standards, an open, flat-to-gently-rolling expanse of dry bush and grassland that gives its elephants their famous reddish tint from rolling and dust-bathing in the park’s iron-rich soil. The Yatta Plateau, formed by an ancient lava flow stretching some 290 kilometres, runs along one edge of the park, while the Galana River cuts through the landscape and drops over Lugard Falls’ smoothed volcanic rock. Because the terrain is so open, game viewing here tends to mean long horizons and large herds rather than dense bush encounters, and the park has rebuilt strong elephant numbers since the heavy poaching pressure of past decades. Aruba Dam, a man-made waterhole on the Voi River, draws consistent wildlife traffic and is one of the most reliable single viewing points in the park.
