Kenya
A bustling Rift Valley town and the natural gateway to Lake Nakuru National Park, with its own crater rim views and archaeological sites.
Nakuru sits in the floor of the Great Rift Valley, ringed by extinct volcanoes and crater lakes, and has grown into Kenya’s fourth-largest city while staying firmly tied to the wildlife and landscapes around it. Most travellers pass through en route to Lake Nakuru National Park, but the town rewards a stop in its own right: the vast Menengai Crater on its northern edge offers some of the best free Rift Valley views in the country, while Hyrax Hill preserves Iron Age and Neolithic settlement remains. It’s a practical, well-supplied base — fuel, hospitals, banks and a good range of accommodation — making it a natural overnight stop on routes between Nairobi, the Mara and points further west.
