Kenya
Kenya’s flagship reserve and the stage for the Great Migration’s river crossings — unmatched predator density on classic golden savanna.
The Masai Mara is the Kenyan extension of the wider Serengeti ecosystem and arguably East Africa’s single most famous safari destination, built on open rolling grassland cut by the Mara and Talek rivers. Between roughly July and October it hosts the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration, as huge columns of wildebeest and zebra force their way across crocodile-filled water on their annual circuit between the Mara and Serengeti. Even outside migration season, the reserve and its surrounding private conservancies hold one of the highest densities of lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena anywhere in Africa, supported by resident populations of buffalo, giraffe, topi and elephant that don’t depend on the migration’s arrival. The Mara Triangle, managed separately from the main reserve, tends to see lower vehicle density and is widely regarded as the most scenic and best-managed section.
