Kenya
A compact Rift Valley park built around a soda lake — one of Kenya’s top rhino sanctuaries and, water levels permitting, a flamingo spectacle.
Lake Nakuru National Park rings a shallow soda lake whose alkaline waters once supported flamboyant gatherings of more than a million lesser flamingos, feeding on the lake’s algae blooms; numbers and the lake’s level shift considerably year to year, so the spectacle is never guaranteed but the park rewards a visit regardless. Behind the shoreline, dense Euphorbia candelabra forest and open grassland support one of Kenya’s most important black and white rhino populations, protected within an electrified perimeter that has made the park one of the country’s most reliable places to see both species on the same game drive. Baboon Cliff, on the park’s western rim, gives a sweeping overview of the whole basin and is a favourite stop for photographs.
