Murchison Falls takes its name from the point where the entire Victoria Nile forces itself through a gorge barely seven metres wide before dropping more than 40 metres in a churn of white water — one of the most dramatic single features anywhere on the river’s course. The falls split Uganda’s largest national park into northern and southern sectors, both holding strong savanna game including elephant, giraffe, buffalo and lion, while the river itself supports dense hippo and Nile crocodile populations best seen on a boat safari upstream to the base of the falls. The contrast between vehicle-based savanna game drives and Nile boat safaris within a single park is fairly unusual on the East African circuit, and a short flight or drive extension into the neighbouring Budongo Forest adds chimpanzee trekking to the same itinerary. Its location in Uganda’s northwest, further from Kampala than the southern parks, has historically kept visitor numbers lower relative to its size and wildlife density.
