Mgahinga Gorilla National Park occupies Uganda’s southwesternmost tip, where the country’s border meets Rwanda and the DR Congo across the Virunga volcanic range — the same chain that holds Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. It’s by far Uganda’s smallest park, and trekking permits here cover just one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, which makes availability tighter and sightings less guaranteed than at Bwindi, though many visitors choose Mgahinga precisely for its quieter trails and lower crowds. What sets it apart from Bwindi is the volcanic terrain itself: three peaks, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo, offer demanding day hikes to crater lakes and ridge-line viewpoints spanning three countries, while the bamboo zones lower down support golden monkey trekking as a reliable alternative or addition to gorilla permits. A Batwa cultural trail, led by members of the indigenous forest community displaced when the park was gazetted, adds a cultural dimension found in few other Ugandan parks.
