Lake Bunyonyi fills a deep, steep-sided basin in Uganda’s far southwestern highlands, its shoreline and 29 islands hemmed by hillsides terraced for farming in a pattern more reminiscent of Southeast Asia than typical East African savanna. Among the deepest lakes on the continent, it is free of bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles — a rarity that makes it one of the few places in the region where open-water swimming is genuinely safe and widely practised. Most visitors arrive here straight from gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s southern sector or Mgahinga, just over an hour away, using a night or two on the lake to recover before continuing the journey, paddled between islands in traditional dugout canoes or simply resting at a lakeside lodge. Local lore attaches stories to several of the islands, most notably Akampene (“Punishment Island”), once used to banish unmarried pregnant women, giving canoe guides plenty to talk about on the unhurried crossings.
