Tucked into Uganda’s far northeastern corner against the South Sudan and Kenya borders, Kidepo Valley is frequently named among the most spectacular parks on the continent by those who make the journey, and just as frequently skipped by visitors deterred by its remoteness. That isolation is the point: the Narus and Kidepo valleys open into wide, mountain-ringed savanna unlike anything else in Uganda, supporting species found in no other Ugandan park, including cheetah, bat-eared fox, striped hyena and greater and lesser kudu. The surrounding Karamoja region remains one of Uganda’s least-developed and culturally distinct areas, home to the semi-nomadic Karamojong pastoralists, whose way of life has changed comparatively little and who welcome respectful visits to their manyattas. Most travellers fly in for two or three nights at the park’s single luxury lodge, trading the convenience of Uganda’s primate circuit for genuine wilderness and near-total privacy on game drives.
