Uganda
Africa’s primate capital — the highest density of primates anywhere on the continent, led by over a thousand chimpanzees.
Kibale’s tropical rainforest holds the highest concentration and diversity of primates found anywhere in Africa, with thirteen species recorded including red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, L’Hoest’s monkey and an estimated 1,500 chimpanzees across several communities. Chimp trekking here tends to deliver close, reliable sightings given that density, and the park additionally offers a full-day habituation experience for visitors who want considerably more time observing a single community than the standard one-hour trek allows. The adjoining Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, run by a local community organisation, adds an easy half-day of birdwatching and further primate sightings without needing a forest permit. Scattered crater lakes in the surrounding farmland, remnants of the same volcanic activity that shaped much of western Uganda, provide a scenic, relaxed counterpoint to the dense forest trekking.
Immerse yourself in a curated collection of experiences designed to connect you deeply with the spirit of the region. From adrenaline-fueled adventures to quiet moments of discovery, explore the diverse ways to tailor your journey.
