Uganda
Uganda’s premier gorilla trekking destination — dense ancient rainforest sheltering roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
Bwindi takes its name seriously — the forest is a tangled, steeply folded wall of vegetation that has remained largely undisturbed since before the last Ice Age, and trekking through it for gorillas is as much a physical undertaking as a wildlife encounter. The park holds more than a dozen habituated gorilla families spread across four distinct trekking sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo), each requiring its own permit and offering a slightly different forest character and difficulty level. Beyond the gorillas themselves, Bwindi is recognised as one of Africa’s most important biodiversity sites, home to over 350 bird species and a healthy population of other primates including chimpanzee and L’Hoest’s monkey. The Batwa, the forest’s original inhabitants who were resettled when the park was gazetted, now lead cultural trail experiences that add a human history dimension increasingly rare elsewhere on the safari circuit.
