Tanzania
A spice island off the Tanzanian coast — Swahili-Arab Stone Town, postcard beaches and reef diving, often paired with a mainland safari.
Zanzibar has drawn traders across the Indian Ocean for over a thousand years, and that history is concentrated in Stone Town, a dense maze of coral-stone buildings, carved doors and minarets that earned UNESCO World Heritage status for its fusion of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influence. Beyond the old town, the island ring is lined with some of the most photographed beaches in East Africa, from the lively north-coast resorts around Nungwi and Kendwa to the quieter, kitesurfing-friendly stretch at Paje on the east coast. Inland, the spice plantations that once made Zanzibar one of the world’s leading clove exporters still run tours through clove, vanilla, cardamom and pepper groves, while Jozani Forest protects the only population anywhere of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Its short flight connection from Dar es Salaam and the northern Tanzania safari circuit makes it the default beach add-on for a Serengeti or Ngorongoro itinerary.
