Tarangire is defined by its river, the only permanent water source for miles in the dry season, which concentrates one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations into herds that can number in the hundreds between June and October. The landscape is instantly recognisable — ancient, swollen baobab trees rising out of golden grassland and dense thickets along the riverbanks — and supports an unusually wide range of antelope, including species like the long-necked gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx found in few other northern-circuit parks. Tarangire’s lions have developed an unusual habit of climbing into acacia and tamarind trees, a behaviour seen reliably in only a handful of places in Africa. Because it sees considerably less tourist traffic than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, it works well both as a standalone short safari and as a quieter add-on to a longer northern circuit itinerary.
