Tanzania
The plain that gives its name to the entire ecosystem — endless grassland, the year-round stage for the Great Migration and Africa’s classic safari scenery.
The Serengeti is the namesake and core of the wider ecosystem it shares with Kenya’s Masai Mara, an almost unbroken expanse of grass plains, acacia woodland and granite kopjes that supports the largest single movement of land mammals on Earth. The Great Migration’s circuit runs through the park nearly continuously — calving on the short-grass southern plains around December to March, then moving north through the year toward the Grumeti and Mara rivers, where the dramatic crossings of July through September draw the most visitors. Away from the migration itself, the Seronera Valley in the park’s centre holds resident lion, leopard and cheetah populations year-round, supported by permanent water that doesn’t depend on the herds passing through. The park’s scale and the relative lack of fencing across the wider ecosystem mean it can absorb visitor numbers while still offering the sense of genuinely open wilderness the name has come to represent.
