Tanzania
Africa’s largest protected wilderness — a remote, lightly visited reserve famed for boat safaris on the Rufiji River and wild dog tracking.
Spanning an area larger than Switzerland, Nyerere National Park — the bulk of the former Selous Game Reserve, renamed in 2019 — is the largest single protected area on the continent, and its scale shows in how few other vehicles you encounter even at its busiest. The Rufiji River cuts through the park in a network of channels, lakes and sandbanks that support one of the only safari circuits in East Africa built around boat game viewing, putting hippo, crocodile and elephant within easy reach of the water. The reserve also holds one of Africa’s most important surviving populations of African wild dog, an endangered predator that has vanished from much of its former range, alongside healthy numbers of lion, buffalo and Tanzania’s largest elephant population outside the northern circuit. Its remoteness and the cost of flying in keep visitor numbers low, which is precisely the draw for travellers who have already done the Serengeti and want genuine wilderness.
