Ngorongoro Crater is the collapsed cone of an extinct volcano that once stood taller than Kilimanjaro, its walls now forming a natural amphitheatre roughly 20 kilometres across and 600 metres deep, enclosing one of the most concentrated wildlife populations anywhere in Africa. Because grass and water remain available on the crater floor through the dry season, animals here don’t migrate out the way they do on the open Serengeti plains, keeping density consistently high year-round — lion prides are easy to find, and the crater holds one of Tanzania’s last secure black rhino populations. Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake at the crater’s centre, frequently draws flamingos, while the Lerai Forest provides shade for elephant bulls and leopard. Most visitors view it as a full-day excursion, descending from a rim lodge in the morning and climbing back out by evening, since overnight camping on the crater floor itself is tightly restricted.
