Tanzania
Tanzania’s second-highest peak — a quieter, more dramatic summit trek through wildlife-filled forest to a horseshoe crater rim.
Mount Meru sits within Arusha National Park, close enough to Kilimanjaro to offer clear views of its larger neighbour from the summit on good days, while seeing a fraction of the climbing traffic. The route is notable for passing directly through forest still inhabited by buffalo, giraffe and colobus monkey — armed ranger escorts are required for the lower stages specifically because of the wildlife — before climbing onto volcanic ash slopes and the knife-edge rim of a horseshoe-shaped crater left by a massive eruption roughly 8,000 years ago. At 4,562 metres it’s a serious trek in its own right, typically completed in three days, and is increasingly used as an acclimatisation climb by parties preparing for Kilimanjaro. The surrounding national park’s Momella Lakes add an easy half-day of flamingo and waterbird viewing at the mountain’s base.
