Tanzania
A compact Rift Valley park beneath a dramatic escarpment, known for tree-climbing lions, dense elephant herds and prolific birdlife.
Lake Manyara packs an unusual range of habitats into a narrow strip between the base of the Rift Valley escarpment and the shallow, alkaline lake itself — dense groundwater forest, open grassland, swamp and the lake margin all within a short drive. It owes much of its fame to one of the few populations of tree-climbing lions in East Africa, which haul themselves into the broad acacia and fig trees during the heat of the day, though sightings depend on patience and a sharp guide. The groundwater forest, fed by springs along the escarpment base, supports one of Tanzania’s densest elephant populations relative to park size, and the lake draws huge numbers of flamingos and other waterbirds when conditions are right. Most visitors fold Manyara into the start or end of a northern-circuit itinerary alongside the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but its forest and birdlife reward a stop in their own right.
