Gombe Stream is tiny by national park standards — a narrow strip of forested ravines running down to Lake Tanganyika — but its scientific significance is outsized: it’s where Dr. Jane Goodall began the research in 1960 that redefined how the world understood chimpanzees and their kinship with humans. That research has continued for more than six decades, making Gombe’s chimp community one of the most studied wild animal populations on Earth, and trekking here means following the same steep, narrow trails researchers still use. The terrain is demanding compared with more open primate destinations, but the reward is an intimate, lightly visited encounter with chimps that show little fear of the small number of guests who make the journey. Like Mahale further south, Gombe is accessible only by boat, and most visitors combine the trek with swimming and relaxing on the lake’s clear water.
