Volcanoes National Park occupies the Rwandan side of the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanic peaks shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo that holds roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It was here that primatologist Dian Fossey conducted the long-term research that brought the species’ plight to global attention, and her former camp and gravesite remain accessible via a dedicated hike. Trekking permits, tightly controlled and limited to a small number of visitors per gorilla family per day, fund much of the park’s conservation and the surrounding community programmes, and Rwanda has positioned the experience firmly as a premium one — both in price and in the standard of lodges built along the park’s edge in recent years. Beyond gorillas, the bamboo forests support golden monkey troops that are considerably easier to trek to, and the volcanic peaks themselves, including Bisoke’s crater lake, offer demanding day hikes for visitors with time beyond the primate trekking.
