Nyungwe Forest is believed to be one of Africa’s oldest surviving rainforests, a high-altitude tangle of montane vegetation in Rwanda’s southwest that has survived relatively intact while forests elsewhere in the region were cleared. It holds thirteen primate species, including habituated chimpanzee communities tracked daily by researchers and rangers, and one of the largest troops of Angolan colobus monkey recorded anywhere in Africa, sometimes numbering several hundred individuals moving through the canopy together. A 70-metre suspension walkway, strung between three viewing platforms high above the forest floor, gives a rare canopy-level vantage point over the forest and its birdlife, which includes several species found nowhere else in Rwanda. The surrounding tea estates that ring the forest edge soften the transition from dense rainforest to cultivated hillside, and most lodges here are built directly into those working plantations.
