Akagera protects the largest remaining wetland in central Africa, a mosaic of savanna, woodland, lakes and papyrus swamp along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania, and stands in sharp contrast to the mountain forests most visitors associate with the country. After being severely depleted during and after the 1994 genocide, the park has been rebuilt over the past two decades through a partnership between Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, culminating in the reintroduction of lion in 2015 and eastern black rhino in 2017 — restoring Akagera as Rwanda’s only Big Five destination.
