Kenya
A laid-back North Coast town built around a protected marine park reef, mangrove creeks and the medieval Gede Ruins.
Watamu is quieter and smaller-scale than the Diani strip further south, centred on a marine national park whose reef and seagrass beds support some of the healthiest coral on the Kenyan coast along with nesting green and olive ridley turtles tracked by a long-running local conservation programme. Inland from the beach, the tidal channels of Mida Creek wind through dense mangrove forest, best explored by boat at sunset when wading birds and the occasional dugong sighting are possible. A short drive away, the Gede Ruins preserve the stone walls, mosques and tombs of a Swahili town abandoned in the 17th century, still half-swallowed by forest. The combination of reef, ruins and mangrove makes Watamu a more varied coastal stop than a beach holiday alone.
