Kenya
A more varied, volcanic landscape than its eastern neighbour — Mzima Springs, lava flows and a protected rhino sanctuary.
Tsavo West trades some of Tsavo East’s vast open horizons for a more broken, varied landscape of volcanic hills, lava flows and natural springs, making it feel like a different park despite sharing a name and a border. Mzima Springs is the standout feature — a series of crystal-clear pools fed by underground rivers off the Chyulu Hills, with an underwater viewing chamber that lets visitors watch hippo and fish from below the surface. Elsewhere, the black, jagged Shetani Lava Flow records relatively recent volcanic activity, and the Ngulia Hills shelter a fenced sanctuary protecting one of Kenya’s recovering black rhino populations. On clear days, the same Kilimanjaro views that define Amboseli appear here too, from a different angle across the lava-strewn plains.
