Kenya
A cool, forested escarpment reserve above the South Coast — Kenya’s last stronghold for sable antelope and a refuge of rare coastal rainforest.
Rising directly behind Diani and the South Coast beaches, Shimba Hills protects one of the last significant fragments of Kenya’s coastal rainforest, a habitat that has all but disappeared elsewhere along the shoreline to agriculture and development. The reserve is the country’s last reliable place to see sable antelope, a striking, curved-horned species that has vanished from most of its former Kenyan range, alongside elephant that move between Shimba Hills and the neighbouring Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. A short walk through the forest leads to Sheldrick Falls, a cool waterfall pool that makes a popular, refreshing stop on a hot coastal day. Its elevation keeps temperatures a few degrees lower than the beach resorts below, and it makes an easy half- or full-day add-on for visitors based in Diani or Mombasa.
Immerse yourself in a curated collection of experiences designed to connect you deeply with the spirit of the region. From adrenaline-fueled adventures to quiet moments of discovery, explore the diverse ways to tailor your journey.
