Kenya
A rugged northern reserve along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, home to arid-adapted wildlife found almost nowhere else in Kenya.
Samburu sits in Kenya’s drier, more rugged north, where the perennial Ewaso Ng’iro River cuts a green ribbon through otherwise sparse acacia scrub and supports wildlife that has adapted specifically to this harsher terrain. The so-called Samburu Special Five — Grevy’s zebra with its narrower stripes, the tall reticulated giraffe, the long-necked gerenuk that browses standing on its hind legs, the desert-adapted beisa oryx, and the striking Somali ostrich — are found here in numbers rarely matched elsewhere in the country. Large elephant herds gather along the riverbanks, particularly in the dry season, and the reserve borders the Samburu people’s traditional grazing lands, adding a strong cultural dimension through village visits alongside the wildlife. It pairs naturally with the neighbouring Buffalo Springs and Shaba reserves under a shared ecosystem.
