Kenya
Africa’s second-highest mountain — a trekking and climbing destination of glacial peaks, alpine moorland and forested lower slopes.
Mount Kenya rises as an extinct volcano in the middle of the country it gives its name to, its jagged twin peaks of Batian and Nelion demanding technical climbing while the slightly lower Point Lenana is reachable by any reasonably fit trekker over a multi-day hike. The mountain’s slopes pass through a dramatic sequence of vegetation zones — dense montane forest giving way to bamboo, then heath and giant lobelia-studded moorland, and finally bare rock and glacier near the summit. Lower down, the forest reserve still holds elephant, buffalo and a range of forest antelope, making the mountain’s foothills worth visiting even without a summit attempt. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the few places in Kenya combining serious high-altitude trekking with classic forest-zone wildlife viewing.
