Meru is wetter and greener than most Kenyan parks, threaded by thirteen permanent rivers and countless springs that support dense riverine forest alongside open grassland and swamp. It owes much of its fame to George and Joy Adamson, who raised the lioness Elsa here in the story that became “Born Free,” and several of their old camp sites remain accessible to visitors. After a period of decline through poaching in the 1980s and 90s, the park has rebuilt strongly, with a dedicated, well-protected sanctuary now holding a growing population of black and white rhino. The varied terrain — quite different from the classic open plains further south — supports an unusually wide range of habitats and wildlife within a relatively compact, far less visited park.
