Lumo — its name an acronym of the three Taita group ranches (Lualenyi, Mramba and Oza) that formed it — sits in the wildlife corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, giving animals room to move between the two parks across community-owned land. The terrain is shaped by ancient lava flows, leaving behind rugged rock formations and natural springs that draw elephant, buffalo, lion and a wide range of antelope, especially as surface water elsewhere dries up. Because it’s entirely community-run, tourism revenue here goes directly to the Taita group ranches that own the land, and lodges like Salt Lick and Lion’s Bluff are built to take advantage of the views and waterholes rather than compete with the Tsavo parks’ own facilities.
