Lamu is the best-preserved of East Africa’s old Swahili trading settlements, its narrow coral-stone streets unchanged enough by modern development to earn UNESCO World Heritage status, and still entirely free of cars — donkeys and dhows do the work that vehicles handle elsewhere. The town has drawn traders, sailors and more recently artists and long-term visitors for centuries, and that layered history shows in its carved wooden doors, mosques and merchant houses. A short walk or boat ride away, Shela’s wide dune-backed beach offers the open-water swimming and sailing that the town’s sheltered channel doesn’t, and a sunset dhow trip remains one of the most distinctive ways to see the coastline anywhere in Kenya. Because road access isn’t advisable, nearly every visitor arrives by air via Manda Airstrip, which has helped keep the island slower-paced and less developed than the mainland resorts.
