Kenya
A dramatic Rift Valley soda lake known for bubbling hot springs, geysers and — conditions permitting — vast flamingo gatherings.
Lake Bogoria sits in a steep-walled section of the Rift Valley, its alkaline waters heated from below by the same geothermal activity that powers a string of hot springs and small geysers along the western shoreline — a genuinely unusual sight in an East African wildlife reserve. The lake has, at various points, hosted some of the largest flamingo gatherings recorded anywhere, when conditions on neighbouring soda lakes push the birds here in search of food, though numbers are unpredictable and shift between Bogoria, Nakuru and Naivasha from year to year. Away from the water, the reserve protects a notable population of greater kudu on the surrounding escarpment slopes, and the dramatic, fault-scarred landscape itself is reason enough for the detour off the main Rift Valley route.
