Overview

Hells Gate is unusual among Kenyan parks in allowing visitors out of their vehicles to cycle and walk through the landscape, an experience made possible by the relative absence of dangerous predators on the open plains. The park’s centrepiece is a narrow gorge flanked by sheer cliffs and volcanic plugs — Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower among them — that reportedly inspired the climactic landscapes of Disney’s The Lion King. Zebra, giraffe, buffalo and various antelope move across the open ground close enough to watch from a bicycle saddle, while geothermal activity at Olkaria, including natural hot springs, hints at the volcanic forces still active beneath the valley floor.
