Kenya
A young volcanic range of green, rolling hills between Amboseli and Tsavo — known for horseback safaris, lava caves and conservancy living.
The Chyulu Hills form a narrow chain of volcanic cones and craters, among the youngest in East Africa, rising abruptly from the dry plains between Amboseli and Tsavo West. Ernest Hemingway is said to have given them their nickname, the “Green Hills of Africa,” and they stay strikingly green even when the surrounding lowlands turn to dust, fed by mist that rolls in off Kilimanjaro. Beneath the surface, a network of lava tubes and caves — including some of the longest in Africa — runs through the hills, formed by the same volcanic activity that produced the dramatic black Shetani lava flow at their base. Rather than vehicle-only game drives, the conservancies here are built around horseback safaris and walking, giving a different rhythm and a closer, quieter encounter with the wildlife that moves freely between Chyulu, Amboseli and Tsavo.
