Kenya
A cool, forested highland park famous for tree-hotel waterhole game viewing, dramatic waterfalls and high moorland scenery.
The Aberdare Range rises sharply from the central Kenyan highlands into a world of dense rainforest, bamboo zones and open Afro-alpine moorland above 3,000 metres. What makes the park distinctive is the experience built around it: a handful of famous tree lodges, including The Ark and Treetops, let guests sit above floodlit waterholes through the night and watch elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog and the occasional leopard come to drink. Below the forest canopy, Karuru Falls drops more than 270 metres in three stages, and clear days reward the climb to the moorland with views stretching to Mount Kenya. It’s a markedly different safari mood from the open plains further south — quieter, cooler and more atmospheric.
