Safari Details
The biggest movement of land animals on the planet takes place across the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. One and a half million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and others sweep through these vast landscapes in search of fresh pasture, also known as the great Wildebeest Migration.
From July through to October every year, these beasts of the plains gather together to cross rivers. Although the movement of wildebeest is constant, their time heading north and east is when numbers are most concentrated and the action is in full flow.
July sees the herds gather on the western edge of Tanzania’s Serengeti, ready to cross the Grumeti and Mara Rivers. August has the massed herds move northwards and towards Masai Mara. September is the month when you can expect northerly action, depending on the rains.
Finally, in October, it’s time for the animals to cross the Mara river once more and travel down to the southern Serengeti plains. Every step of the arduous, annual movement is stunning to behold and visible across both Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.
Focusing your African safari on the great Wildebeest Migration presents you with opportunity to see not only the migratory mammals, but their predators such as:
- Lions
- Cheetahs
- Crocodiles
And scavengers like hyenas.
Your Tanzanian and Kenya safari is a private tour, with an English-speaking tour guide. The safari vehicle will only be shared with your party and your guide will work with your priorities in mind. It’s possible to arrange for flights between Nairobi and Masai Mara and from the Mara down to Serengeti which afford aerial views of the landscape and incur additional costs.
